Lotus Elite (2007)

Powered by the Coventry Climax FWE 1216 cc producing around 85 BHP at 6100 rpm and utilizing a 4 speed ZF gearbox and combined with disc brakes all round and coil spring suspension, it is no wonder that  when the Lotus Elite was unveiled in 1957 at the Earls Court Motor Show it was conceptually miles ahead of its time. Colin Chapman's fascination with fibreglass reinforced resin as a potential structural material, combined with a conviction that separation of chassis and bodyshell was a waste of  weight,  resulted in a wonderfully simple and effective conclusion. The Shell/chassis was created in just three moulds and only minimal sub-frames were utilised at high load impact points. Whilst the all alloy FWE 1216cc Climax engine is small in capacity, it lacked nothing in performance, which when coupled with Chapman's expertise in handling made these Elites highly suitable for competition, resulting in 5 consecutive class wins at Le Mans between 1959 and 1964. This special equipment model was purchased by the now deceased owner in 1962 who kept it for 8 years before selling it due to family commitments. Much later in 1994, he was made aware that the Lotus was being offered for sale at auction by Christie's as a restoration project and he subsequently re-purchased the car.  He was a capable engineer and he set about creating what is today a wonderfully restored example. We have recently been instructed by his family to find a new owner for a motor car that was described as his "Pride and Joy" The car is very sensibly priced at £69,950. Any inspection is welcomed.
