LOTUS EUROPA S2 (1970)
I am offering my beloved Lotus Europa for sale.
The car is a 2nd series model of the Lotus Europa, and has been in family ownership for more than 20 years now.
In 1970 the car was delivered new and first registered in the U.K, in the 1990s my British cousin Harald bought the car and being a Lotus enthusiast and a serial Europa owner, he restored the car for his own collection, money and effort no object.
Chassis, brakes, etc. have been completetely restored, the body has been painted in the original british racing green in highest quality. Even now, more than 20 years later, the paint is shiny and fresh, which gives the quality of the paintwork an excellent testimony.
The drivetrain has been comprehensively checked, but found to be in excellent condition it was decided not to do a full rebuild of engine and gearbox.
The interior as well only shows minor signs of wear, in fact is almost immaculate. The car seems to have been well cared for in his early life. And the 54.000 miles on the speedo might well be the very low original mileage, but there is no service record to proof that fact.
For health reasons my cousin unfortunately drove the Europa only on very rare occasions, the car spent the last couple of years in his dry garage in Yorkshire.
Some years ago I bought the Lotus and imported it to Austria. I carried out the recommissioning, repaired all the slight damages which were caused by the lack of use. The car then underwent the very strict homologation test in Austria and sailed through with flying colors.
The only paint damage is a scratch at the left hand rear wheel arch, which happened to me when in reversed the car into my garage. Apart from that the paintwork is still impressive and shiny, not showing its age.
As you would expect from a Lotus the Europa drives great, the car feels absolutely at home on the narrow and windy roads here in Austria, it is pure joy to drive it, delivering the maximum “smile per mile” you can achieve.
The simple and robust 1.470 ccm Renault engine with 78 bhp is well strong enough to offer lively performance, hence the Europa’s low weight of only 650 kg.
And the Renault-engines S2 models are even rarer than the Twin-Cam version with a production number of 4.294 compared to 4.950 Twin-Cam examples.
A Lotus Europa in such a charmingly original and unmolested condition is as rare as hen’s teeth.
Most of the Europa models have been restored or repaired at least one or more times during their life, losing most of the genuine character of an original car.
This specific Europa is very near the condition it was when rolling out of the Hethel’s factory’s doors in 1970.
I decided to part with the Europa, as I am living in the town center and having started a new business I do not have the time to enjoy the Europa. And I want to concentrate on my pair of classic Minis which I also use as daily drivers.
The Lotus is registered and insured for road use, and I will be happy to invite you to a test drive.
