1957 Mercedes 300 SL Roadster VIN: 198 042 75000603 Body: 198 042 7500527 Engine: 198 980 7500567 How do you follow up the world's first supercar? With a convertible version of course. In 1954 the Gullwing set the world on fire by offering a Le Mans winning racecar for the street. In 1957 the iconic car was redesigned into an elegant convertible. Although it shared the same potent drivetrain of the Gullwing, the Roadster featured an all-new chassis, which including a significantly improved rear suspension. Just 554 of the new Mercedes-Benz roadsters were built in 1957, with production dwindling down to a mere 26 in its final year of 1963. The total number would come to only 1,858 made. This 1957 Roadster was optioned with factory luggage, and a Becker-Mexico shortwave radio. 75000603 was owned for many years by Chuck Mountain, former engineer and owner at Kar Kraft Engineering, the performance skunk works for Ford's highly successful Le Mans, Can-Am, SCCA and Trans-Am race teams in the 1960s. About 15 years ago he hired an employee directly from the Mercedes Classic Car Center in Germany just to restore this car. All work was done in-house at Mountain's facility in Florida, and all the restoration parts were purchased from Paul Russell & Co. A true body-off restoration, every aspect of the car was restored to factory original specifications, and finished to Pebble Beach Concours standards. Following the restoration the car was kept in a climate controlled facility, and has only covered about 300 miles since. Early in 2014 the car was refreshed by the 300SL experts, Rudi and Company. They went through the car from stem to stern, and addressed any issues the car had developed from sitting idle. The entire fuel system was rebuilt, including the injection pump, fuel pump, and fuel tank. The distributor was refurbished, and host of small items were addressed. Since arriving at Canepa the 300SL has received over 250 hours of additional mechanical servicing and cosmetic detailing. As with any ground up restoration the devil is in the sorting of the car after its completion. All the elements of this 300SL have been expertly scrutinized, and all the work necessary to finish the car down to the last detail have been executed. From resealing the transmission to rebuilding the brakes nothing has been overlooked. Now 75000603 is not only a concours show car, but also a completely reliable and roadworthy companion for extended touring and a lifetime of enjoyment. -
