Being a demonstrator example this G Wagon is packed with all the most desirable features of the time including the bullet-proof 5-cylinder 3-litre diesel engine allied to selectable 2WD, 4WD high ratio, 4WD low ratio, plus diff locks. Extras like electric windows, washing headlights, dog guard, alloy wheels, central locking and a plastic fuel tank all combine to get the G-Wagon fancier's juices going. As the previous owner stated: "this vehicle has been an absolute gem in the ten years I have owned it and is probably the most reliable thing I have ever owned in 57 years."
He also tells us that regular services have been carried out with the oil changed religiously twice per year and new parts fitted as required including rear shocks and springs, clutch, brake discs and a stainless steel exhaust – all items you would expect to replace on a vehicle that has done some 135,000 miles (although the speedo reads 71,000 miles as it was replaced at 64,000 miles). What a car, with prices steadily escalating.
Adored and ignored in equal measure, the G-Wagon is one of those vehicles that seem to polarise opinions. Ugly, boxy and crude to some, it is the finest, most capable and best engineered 4x4 of all time to others. However the facts speak for themselves: despite having a cripplingly high price tag right from its launch in 1979, the G-Wagen has won such a loyal fan base that it remains in production to this day, making it the longest running model in Mercedes history.
Available with a range of engines from a 2-litre petrol to a 3-litre diesel in both long and short wheelbase formats, its trump card was a set of three fully locking differentials, controlled by a profusion of knobs and levers, that gave it the ability to cross even the worst terrain that Planet Earth could throw at it. Considered essential equipment by the German military and emergency services, it also proved an irresistible security blanket to middle class parents terrified that young Wolfgang might not make it to school on time.
First registered to Mercedes Ltd. as a demonstrator vehicle in June 1989, this particular example is a top spec 300GDS in desirable manual, short wheelbase, diesel form. It has only had two owners since then, the first being a mid-Wales vet who kept it right up until 2003, maintaining it religiously for those Welsh winter emergencies where not getting through wasn't an option.
