Porsche 996 GT3 - Viper Green With Cage & Carbon Wing (1999) £34,995
- Location: Lancashire, United Kingdom
Launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 1999, it was conceived as the modern day incarnation of the 2.7 RS. And as with its 1973 predecessor, it was built to homologate the 911 for racing.
What made it special was its engine. Sitting below the shapely rear wing wasn’t a tuned version of the standard 3.4-litre flat-six, but an all-new 3.6-litre unit based on the turbo from the firm’s GT1 supercar.
Porsche re-engineered the hand-built engine for mass production, dispensing with the turbos but keeping the titanium con rods. This allowed it to rev much higher than the standard unit, adding huge credibility to the GT3’s performance car appeal.
At launch, the 360bhp GT3 was the most powerful normally aspirated 911 ever sold to the public. The use of race-inspired parts wasn’t limited to the engine, either. The six-speed manual gearbox was taken from the rare 993 GT2, while a lower ride height, adjustable dampers, firmer springs and reworked anti-roll bars meant the chassis had equal pedigree. Upgraded brakes and lightweight 18-inch wheels completed the dynamic improvements, and a deep chin spoiler, wider sills and double-deck rear wing ensured there was no mistaking the GT3.
Needless to say, it had the performance to match its looks. The 0-60mph sprint took 4.7 seconds, while top speed was 187mph. Even more impressively, the GT3 was the first production model to lap Germany’s Nürburgring circuit in less than eight minutes. Plus, in its first-ever race, the competition version won its class in the 1999 Le Mans 24 Hours.
This 1999 / V GT3 is a very special car with an amazing spec.
Originally Speed Yellow, it has been professionally wrapped in Viper Green with carbon bonnet and black bumpers and roof. This can easily be removed, with no damage to the paintwork underneath.
The rear wing has been upgraded to a larger carbon item to add to the aggressive look of the car.
The suspension has been lowered and the wheels have been changed for lightweight black rims, wrapped up in sticky Toyo T888 tyres.
The brake disks are uprated items with big grooves in and bigger calipers too.
The interior straight away looks like it belongs on a race track. The huge Recaro bucket seats are incredibly comfortable and hold you like no standard seats will, and the big roll cage over your shoulder is a reminder that this car means business. You are held in place by red Schroth harnesses.
The seats are lightweight items with Porsche crests and the cage has been uprated with extra bracing in the centre. The originals will also come with the car.
The performance of this GT3 has been increased with a few choice modifications, including a cat-bypass exhaust system.
This has been professionally setup on a rolling road, and now produces 394 BHP.
This isn't a car for posing and looking pretty, its a car built to be brutally fast round a track, or your favourite B-road.
This car comes with a big folder full of invoices and history, you can spend hours just reading about all the care this car has received over the years.
It has been in storage for the last 2 years, so has hardly done any miles since its last service. The service book is fully stamped up by Porsche man in dealers, and the last few done by specialists Ninemeister.
We have many of the original parts with it, such as the spoiler and boot lid, seats, alloy wheels, calipers, disks, roll cage & splitter.
