This beautifully presented example of Porsche’s legendary Speedster was completed on July 15, 1957, and shipped to Hoffman Motor Car Co., Inc. of New York – ordered with US bumpers, sealed beam headlights, and English instruments. It arrived in sleek black paint – one of only 141 356 A Speedsters so finished.
In 1983, a discerning Porsche enthusiast hired restoration expert Harv Smith of San Francisco to locate a largely intact late-model Speedster. After extensive research Mr. Smith successfully found just the car in Del Mar, California, which had been owned by Alan Hale since 1975. Although ownership prior to this is undocumented, Mr. Hale confirmed the odometer reading of 64,883 miles to be correct.
Equally important was the fact that the body panels, engine, and transmission numbers matched the Kardex for chassis number 83592. The new owner had this confirmed in a Porsche factory letter dated 1983, which is included in the sale of the car.
After acquiring this rare Speedster, the owner had Harv Smith commence a full restoration. A premier judge for the Porsche Club of America Concours during the 1970s and 1980s, and a regular contributor to Excellence magazine, Mr. Smith expertly restored the car to concours standards in the popular Meissen Blue with a red interior, oatmeal carpet, and a tan top. The Speedster immediately won Division 1 at the 29th Porsche Club of America Chicago Region Parade, held in Appleton, Wisconsin. This prestigious accolade was documented and photographed in the 1984 fall issues of the Porsche Panorama, Christophorus, Motor Klassik, and Sport Auto magazines, all of which are included in the sale of the car.
During the subsequent years of stewardship, the current owner has fastidiously maintained the speedster both mechanically and cosmetically. Upgrades performed include an engine rebuild and installation of an XYZ wiring harness by Stahl Motor Sports, a transmission overhaul by Mike Robbins, a new OEM ZF steering box, and new wheel brake cylinders. More recently, the instruments were rebuilt, the chrome refinished, and a new windshield installed.
In 2012, the owner had the car repainted in black to return it to its historically correct and rare appearance. The underside of the car, front compartment, and engine bay have not been altered since the day of the 1984 Parade win, and although the carpet, side curtains, top, and tonneau have been recently renewed, the original red vinyl interior of the initial restoration has been preserved.
This magnificent 356 A Speedster, presenting just 72,000 miles, is offered today in excellent cosmetic and operating condition. It comes with a complete and accurate 356 A tool kit, original date-stamped wheels, Bilstein jack and handle, original banjo VDM steering wheel and headlight blinker ring, as well as the side curtains, top boot, and numerous copies of bills collected over almost 30 years of ownership.
The appearance of this Speedster at auction represents an opportunity to acquire an outstanding example that displays the care that has been lavished on it by a devoted enthusiast. Its dramatic color combination, matching-numbers status, and long-term ownership history set it apart from nearly all other examples currently available.
