SUNBEAM 16.9 DROPHEAD (2012) £29,950
Nadder Valley Classics
- Location: Salisbury, United Kingdom

Description
Top quality vintage cars are always a thrill to have in stock and this lovely Sunbeam drophead coupe is one of the nicest to grace our showroom. Wolverhampton's finest could hold its own with the very best in the vintage years and its products have never fallen out of favour with enthusiasts, thanks to their smoothness and superb engineering.
Our car, chassis number 5726K, is a rather unusual example of the popular 16.9hp model, in production from 1926. It is a four-seater drophead coupe, one of several exclusive designs created by James Young for the leading London Sunbeam agents, Pass and Joyce. The 16.9 was powered by a relaxed and flexible straight six ohv engine of 2035cc capacity. It featured gear driven timing for the first time and was said to be capable of pulling from 5-62mph in top gear. The James Young bodywork offers a simple and effective lined folding head, generous seating for four adults on pinstripe cord fabric and luxuries such as wind-up windows.
The car was exported to Australia from new and remained there until two years ago. It was restored in the 1980s and the extensive file shows almost continuous use from that time. Since its arrival back in the UK it has had work to the engine's top end, the brakes, suspension and wiring in preparation for the MOT. It has been used regularly and has proved totally reliable on several long journeys. It was driven from London to Wiltshire, mixing quite happily with the Friday afternoon traffic. It is only now offered for sale as the owner has been given the opportunity to purchase a Sunbeam 25 and cannot keep both.
Having never driven a vintage Sunbeam before, I was impressed with the refinement and the sheer usability of the car. It starts on the button, shows good oil pressure and moves smoothly through the gears. The steering is delightfully precise and the brakes feel well up to their task. The right-hand gear change is soon mastered and the top gear flexibility makes for very relaxed progress.
This fine vintage motor car should prove ideal for touring and VSCC events. It is well sorted, taxed and tested and ready to use.
