A VERY sorry day!

I have owned this car since 1996 but she has been SORN since 1998/9.

She was built between 1996 and 1998 by Ian Birch of legendary DUBSPORT fame (when they were the best in the business) at a cost of over £40K back in the day!

The car was made public at GTi International in 1998 at the same time as Ians Lime Green twin engined MK1 Golf (A7UFO for those old enough to remember).

For the next year she was shown at numerous car shows around the country and featured in too many magazines to remember including a front cover of Max Power (those were the days!).

In the last 17 years she has covered less than 1,000 miles and has been being rebuilt for the last 10 years so hasn't been outside since about 2000!

She was originally a mint 3 door 1.1 Driver in Red before being transformed into the original incarnation of the car.

In those days she was Napal Orange (a 1970's VW colour) but a few years ago I had the car completely stripped and painted inside and out in Helios Blue (LA5Y pain code) which was a standard colour on the run out MK1 Golf GTi Campaign edition (£2,000+).

The rolling shell has been in storage in this new shade and hasn’t seen the light of day since being painted so is MINT.

For a few years the rolling shell was a static display in the showroom of a VW tuning company so it has been kept nice and dry.

A huge amount of additional expenditure has been lavished on the car over the years but I have never got around to having her re-assembled.

Brand new staggered Schmitt TH Line split rims were fitted with new 195/50/15 Silverstone road legal cut slicks (£2,500) and these have never turned a wheel outside!

I had a replacement engine built (over £3,000) for the car after the original engine was swapped into a Corrado VR6 turbo syncro that I also used to own after it suffered a piston failure.

The Golf comes with a ZERO mile freshly built 3.0 VR6 Turbo block with brand new low compression Wossner pistons, Pauter titanium rods, all new bearings, fully polished and ported head (£1,500), custom ground cams, brand new KKK K27 turbo (plus originally fitted K27 as a spare), HGP short inlet manifold, PWR barrel charge cooler (rated to 1,000 bhp), Scorpion exhaust +++++

Everything is there but the engine needs assembling (bottom end is all done) as it has done zero miles.

She still has her Helix built clutch and an as new (< 200 miles) Quaife 6 speed all steel dog box with LSD and final drive (cost over £3,500). The box is geared for acceleration (I have the final drive and gear ratio details somewhere).

I did start a list of what the car had cost to build but I stopped when I topped £50K!

Having owned the car since before I had kids I now find myself with my eldest son eligible to drive himself this year (that makes me feel old) but he is more interested in modern cars than classics.

In reality I will never get around to having the car re-assembled and if I did I can’t see me ever driving her as I am in my 40s now and life has moved on.

This is an opportunity for a real enthusiast to take this on as a project and re-create what was one of the most iconic MK1 Golfs to have ever been built.

I have held on to the car for the last 17 years without ever finding the time to finish the project off so I am going to give someone else the opportunity.
