Le Mans Classic visit with no spare?
Hi. Planning on camping for a few days in July for the Le Mans Classic. In Healey Mk III so little room for tent and associated paraphernalia. As a result I am considering leaving my spare (which takes up most of the boot) behind but I have been advised that it is illegal to travel without a spare in France. Anyone got any idea of the penalties if one is caught? Is it likely that it would be a problem?
bertie,
what you could do, is take all the necessary bits for the car, spare wheel, high vis jackets, tools etc etc and buy a cheap tent when you get toLe Mans. There is a huge Carrefour in Le Mans, it's pretty much a Hyper market, and it sells virtually everything! they definately have cheap tents, sleeping bags, camping stoves BBQ's etc along with the usual stuff you'd find in a big supermarket over here.
the only thing with this approach is that it could be a risky one, as there might be loads of people thinking the same thing!
good luck!
I agree with Nutta29, Very risky strategy I would have thought and you could end up paying a high fine and probably go on record. French police are very strict and I saw many of them on my way to Germany, South of France and Belgium. It is also a long drive and if something happens (Touch wood it won't) you would be thankful to have a spare in your car. Better not risk it mate, I am also driving to Le Mans and I do quite a few road trip during the year, therefore I always essential stuffs in my boot, even if I have to put my dog on the roof!! lol :)
take Nutta29 advioce, you can definitely buy a cheap tent at Carrefour, they normally have some pretty good ones at reasonable prices

Why not take an inflator can instead of the spare. That's all my Cayman R has, so It can't be illegal, can it?
Thanks for your comments guys. Paul, I had considered taking a can and I think you have a good case as yours is original equipment, but I'm not sure I would be quite so lucky if they sussed me!
The tent idea is out I'm afraid cos I've just spent eighty quid on a second hand one. (plus I'm such a tightwad that I couldn't bring myself to leave one behind).
Think I might have a practice pack with everything I absolutely must have and let that make the decision for me. I do have a small boot rack, but I don't want to load that up very high or I will lose my rearward vision. My quarterlight mirror is a waste of space.
Can't wait to set off though. See you there nutta!
Thanks again.
Fair enough Bertie! let us know how it goes for you. I am also going there by car (Saloon) so I might have a bit of space if needed. Can't confirm yet though.
See you there guys
