Just received an email cancelling the 2014 Euroclassic.  Really sad news - this has been our summer holiday for the last 20 years.  Seems a bizarre decision - I haven't seen the 2014 event advertised anywhere, apart from via email as a 'previous entrant' - but now they've pulled the plug due to lack of interest, nearly 8 months before it's due to run!!!

Oh well - just have to go 'off piste', I suppose...

That is a great shame and, it must be said, quite odd to cancel so long before the event when most people are only just starting to think about it.

I would have thought they could have given it another couple of months of pushing it if they had wanted (unless there is a different route cause to the one stated).

James - do you mean 'root cause'?  I suspect there is...

Ha, yes and no. I was trying to be clever with a pun and lending some ambiguity to what may be at the root of this (given that these routes are so difficult to plan and that is one option), but failed. Again. It's funny how often that happens, I really should learn from (oft-repeated) experience.

Geddit.  Oh, the difficulty of conveying the nuances of our language in the written word...

As for the route, Pete Wellington has already produced a route and done the preliminary planning - the printed proposal was on show at the NEC in Nov.  Weird - another agenda, I fear.

Since this event seems to half cooked already, could not C&SC step in to run the show? I am sure there would be enough interest particularly if the PistonHeads element joined in.

As of last week, a group of entrants have managed to keep it afloat - just.  The run (I doubt we're allowed to call it 'Euroclassic') will be just a 3-4 day run around France and Belgium, with breakdown backup from the ever-excellent Britassist and following a lot of hard work by one of the longstanding entrants.  What is really cheering is that some of the volunteer officials, always the true heroes of the event, will be there as usual helping us along the way.

Going by the timing and the way in which this was done, I can't help thinking that for reasons best known to themselves the MSA don't want this event to continue.  If they end up running just the Wales Rally GB (or whatever it's called), there is a danger they will become just a licensing authority with little connection to the motoring enthusiast.  This event has been truly great - it would be such a shame to lose it for good.
