The motorsport world is currently mourning the loss of Jack Sears, the first person to win the British Saloon Car Championship, who sadly passed away at the age of 86. Gentleman Jack’s talent extended far beyond touring cars, ranging from his early days at the wheel of his father’s 1914 TT Sunbeam through to a fifth-place finish alongside Mike Salmon at the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1963.

Here is a selection of evocative images from the LAT archives outlining the wonderful and varied racing career of a man who will be missed by a great many.
