Sywell Pistons and Props

| 8 Oct 2014

More than 13,000 classic car fans flocked to Sywell Aerodrome on 27-28 September for the second annual Sywell Classic Pistons and Props celebration. The celebration of historic motor sport and aviation legends featured everything from Ford GT40s to Lancaster bombers, and also saw a speed of 192mph clocked by a Lancia LC2 on the site's runway.

"The feedback has been overwhelming," said event director Tom Siddall. "It's brilliant how all the people involved have really taken this event to their hearts. All of them commented on the atmosphere and it was great to see more and more people arriving in period clothes and getting into the spirit of the festival."

Modified classics played an important role at the festival, with some testing their mettle on the runaway, which was used as a drag strip during the event.

More people than ever before chose to turn-up in vintage clothing that matched their classic cars.

There were plenty of Volkswagen split-screen campers showing a recent resurgence in interest, particularly with younger enthusiasts.

Plenty of more specialised classics turned out to take on the drag strip, including March F5000s.

Ford RS200s and Renault Turbo 2s were part of the Group B rally contingent.

Away from the race demonstrations, visitors could browse a number of trade stands, many utilising period vehicles. The Citroen H Van was particularly popular.

Classic American muscle drew some of the biggest crowds of the weekend, with this Dodge Charger proving a hit with young and old alike.

British classics were out in force: this Morris Minor also brought a trailer. Perfect for saving on hotel bills!
