V8 versions of new W116-type S-Class, some say the best cars in the world, Rolls-Royce notwithstanding. Always with automatic transmission, usually with very complete equipment. To drive one was to be insulated from normal motoring, and normal living. A great sybaritic experience, at up to 130mph. 450SEL had 4ins longer wheelbase, recognised by longer rear doors, and more rear seat space, merely making a great car superlative. Could they improve it for the eighties? Indeed they could!
