By M-B standards, this was a 'homologation special' when introduced, to help the 'works' team's rallying efforts. Really the 450SLC with enlarged 240bhp light-alloy V8 (used throughout 1980s in all big Mercs). Three-speed automatic transmission, but no manual option. Light alloy skin panels, front and rear spoilers, and weight down by 250lb. 140mph plus top speed, almost but not quite a competitive rally car. Later derivatives known as 500SLC, before definitive versions relaunched in 1980.
