Larger, smoother and more modern Peugeot medium-sized car to replace 404 - but this took years. All-independent suspension on saloons at first, some down-market versions with rigid rear axle from '73; cavernous estates always had rigid rear end. Top-of-range versions had injection and 100mph performance, and were successful long-distance/rough-road rally cars. Gave rise to sport derivatives.
