The VW-based sports car that corners 10mph faster than its competition; first full year of production 1950. UK sales start late '53, sp expect twin-leading-shoe brakes, all-synchro 'boxes and 12-volt electrics on anything you buy here. 1100 unit not marketed in Britain, 1290 unit replaces 1287 during '54; 1500 (plain-bearing crankshaft) from Sept '52. Most potent variant is the 1500 Super (70bhp) with its roller-bearing crank; there's also a 1300 Super with the same beautifully-engineered power unit. One-piece screen for 1953.
