SS JAGUAR 1½-LITRE (1938-40)
4-door saloon, drophead coupé.
Away from the sidevalves at last, the engine was basically Standard 14 but with an SS ohv head. It now had a 112½ins wheelbase, the engine had coil ignition, there were all round semi-elliptics and Girling mechanical brakes and a coupé cost £318. It was ideal for those who coveted the 2½-litre SS's looks and accommodation, but couldn't afford its tax, fuel and insurance bills. '40 season cars had black faxed instruments and piston type dampers, and the attractive drophead coupé was unusual for using so much steel and so little wood.
