The 'S' suffix spells an extra carburettor, nine more brake horses (54 instead of 45), 85mph, and appreciably better acceleration in the upper ranges, though these engines don't like the sort of cheap petrol you can stuff into a Beetle's tank. All S-cars sold in Britain are to de luxe specification.
