Affordable classic cars pack fledgling auction

| 10 Apr 2015

Dozens of affordable classics – many of which are expected to sell for less than £10,000 – will cross the block at Classic Car Auctions’ second sale on 21 April, with a charming ex-Police Morris Oxford one of the standout lots.

The 1957 example is one of the cheapest cars in the sale with an estimate of £2500-4000, but it has one of the most intriguing histories. Unlike the 1500cc cooking model Oxford, the Police special boasts an uprated 1750cc block. The car spent its early life in service with the Mid-Wales Police, while its history from 1964 to the present day is well documented in a thick history file.

Similar money (£3500-4500) will bag you a 1980 Mercedes-Benz 230CE. The fuel-injected 2.3-litre coupé also comes with a comprehensive history file, while just 66,000 miles has been covered over the past 35 years.

Slightly slower, but much more striking is a 1972 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia. The red coupé has been with its current owner for the past seven years. Some remedial paintwork will be needed in the future, which is the main reason for the tempting estimate of £7500-9000.

A 1994 Porsche 968 Sport offers a bit more bang for your buck. The 236bhp GT has covered 140,000 miles, but a hefty folder of receipts should reassure most buyers. Those of a more sporting disposition will be pleased to see that it’s fitted with a six-speed manual transmission. It could fetch up to £10,000.

A BMW E36 M3 from the same year also wears an upper estimate of £10,000, but with more than 100,000 miles on the clock and being the less desirable 3-litre variant, it seems like strong money. Any prospective buyer will have to factor in the cost of paint rectifications to the boot and front valance.

It may be modern, but a 2007 Peugeot 206 HDI with less than 1000 miles on the clock is worth a mention. Decked-out in promotional Total 206 Super Cup livery, the diesel hatchback reportedly spent most of its life in dealer showrooms. An interesting proposition, but the diesel engine seems to jar slightly with the full rollcage and racing bucket seats!

If you’re not troubled by poor fuel economy, a 1984 Cadillac Eldorado should make a pleasant change of pace. The 4.1-litre automatic has been with its current owner for the past two years after being imported to the UK. It is estimated at £6500-8500.

Following C&SC’s Renault Clio Williams feature in the April issue, plenty of you will have your eye on this tidy 1994 example. The car has only had three owners in its life, with the vendor’s custodianship lasting nine years. It’s a desirable first series model and would be a bargain at its lower estimate of £4500.

A 1990 Mercedes-Benz 560SEC is temptingly priced at £3-5000, but an accident in 1996 that resulted in the car being written off means that it would be wise to give the car a thorough inspection before placing a bid.
