Lagonda world record smashed at Revival auction

| 15 Sep 2014

A world-record price for a Lagonda was the highlight of Bonhams' frenzied auction at the Goodwood Revival. The auction house raised £1,569,500 for EPE 97, the famous Fox & Nicholl Lagonda LG45R Rapide Sports Racing Two-Seater with superb race history.

The Lagonda was top-seller of the £15.4million sale, which also featured the rump of the Maranello Rosso Collection that Bonhams previously sold cars from in Monterey.

With 20 cars – 10 Ferraris and 10 Abarths – going under the hammer, the collection amassed more than £3.5million, including £634k paid for a 1991 Ferrari F40.

Other sale highlights included a 1930 OM 665 SS MM Superba with Mille Miglia class-winning history (£1,255,900), a 1937 Maserati Tipo 6CM (£606,300) and a 1933 Maserati Tipo 4CM (below, £427,100).

The 1959 BMC five-tonne race transporter with coachwork by Marshall's of Cambridge made just shy of £100k.

James Knight, Bonhams' group motoring director, said: “What a weekend – beautiful weather, fantastic cars, and hours of exciting bidding in what has been our biggest Goodwood Revival sale ever.

“Top lot the Lagonda ‘EPE 97’ captured everyone’s attention with its illustrious racing history, but with several star cars, bidders had a huge diversity of motoring to ignite their interest. The auction received attention from all around the globe, with bids coming in from the United States, the far East, and all over Europe – a great sale to end the summer season.”
