Silverstone Auctions had a mixed outing over two days at Race Retro, some of its wares (especially the watches, luggage, wine and rings) struggling to shift, but with some stunning results for its key lots.
Star of the show was the ex-Profumo Affair Jaguar that belonged to scandal linchpin Dr Stephen Ward.
There was a bidding frenzy over the 1959 XK150 dhc, with the eventual all-in price being a huge £124,200, more than double the car's pre-sale estimate.
Other big results at the £1.8million sale included a 1987 Aston Martin V8 Vantage Volante X-Pack (£167,900) and a 1957 Porsche 356A Coupé (£60,950).
Most eyes were on the competition cars, however, which as well as a wealth of Ford Escorts, offered some interesting options that were ready to race or rally.
There were no fewer than five Lotus Cortinas, with a 1969 Mk2 making £18,630 while an example from a year later was a no-sale.
A trio of Mk1s also went under the hammer, the best of them, a 1964 racer, selling for £53k. Another 1964 example was unsold while a 1966 car with FIA papers come in at just over £45k.
Stand-out of the competition cars, however, was a 2000 Ford Mondeo Super Touring that fetched £103k.
The Harrier LR9C Group C racer that we also highlighted prior to the sale made £32,200.
Back on the road cars, a Ferrari 412 was unsold, but its ancestor, a 1976 365GT4 2+2 shot past a high estimate of £32,000 to make £40,825.
