Bullitt chase recreated at Silverstone

| 12 May 2014

One of the most famous car chases of all time has been relived in Towcester in anticipation of the Silverstone Classic and the event's commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Ford Mustang, taking place on 25-27 July.

The promotional film stars a Highland Green Ford Mustang similar to that used by Steve McQueen in the original, which pursues a bespectacled villain in a black Dodge Charger. The story begins in a sleepy Silverstone village before reaching the track, where the action really starts.

What follows is an awesome series of tail-out corners aping the chase from the the 1968 film, which eventually results in the Charger being forced off the circuit and bursting into flames.

As well as recreating the movie's stunts, the film includes a number of nods to the '60s picture, notably the inclusion of a mysterious green Volkswagen Beetle in a number of the scenes.

“It’s hard to imagine a better way for us to celebrate the Mustang’s forthcoming 50th birthday party than by making this special homage to the classic car chase in Bullitt,” said Nick Wigley, Silverstone Classic event director. “As you can imagine, we had a lot of fun making this film – not least as it gave us all a great excuse to watch the original movie again!”

Both of the cars from the video will be present at the Silverstone Classic as part of the Mustang's 50th anniversary celebrations, which will also include an on-track parade by the Mustang Owners' Club.

The cars will be joined by other famous movie Mustangs, including the stars of Gone in 60 Seconds and American Gangster. To top it all, a pair of P51 Mustangs will perform aerial stunts to dazzle the crowd.
