Record breaking dynasty to be celebrated at Shelsley Walsh

| 17 Jul 2017

Malcolm and Donald Campbell are to be celebrated at the biggest event of the year at Shelsley Walsh: Classic Nostalgia, which takes place this weekend (22-23 July).

A replica of the famous Napier Bluebird record car will take pride of place at the summer event, which will host Gina Campbell and Don Wales, who will recount tales of the record breaking family’s achievements on land and water. They will be joined by none other than Mr Whoppit – the teddy bear that accompanied Donald Campbell during his various record attempts.

The Campbells will share the spotlight with a number of historic rally cars, which will gather to mark the 20th anniversary of the World Rally Championship. A number of legendary machines from Ford, Toyota and Mitsubishi will be on show, as well as an iconic 555-liveried Subaru Impreza. Mitsubishi works driver Kristian Sohlberg will also make an appearance, as he is reunited with his Lancer WRC04.

Elsewhere, visitors will enjoy the return of the Classic & Sports Car Concours d’Elegance, which will feature the first 100 cars to meet the criteria of judge Simon Taylor. The top 15 cars will parade up the historic hill climb at lunchtime.

“This really should be a fantastic weekend, and we have some very special cars and guests,” said Midland Automobile Club commercial manager Mark Constanduros. “We are encoring people to come along in 40s, 50s, 60s and period style and enjoy a real family occasion.”

“Attractions will include a dedicated food court, trade stands and many classic car and club displays, alongside a flypast from a Dakota on Saturday, continuous entertainment including dancing lessons, and of course, an amazing selection of wonderful cars taking to the hill in serious competition on both days.”

“We have also commissioned a selection of special memorabilia items just to mark this huge event, including t-shirts, posters and car plaques and the action starts here at Shelsley Walsh at 8:30am each day.”
