Silverstone Classic to host 25th anniversary extravaganza

| 10 Feb 2015

Organisers of the Silverstone Classic – which is celebrating its Silver Jubilee from 24-26 July – have announced the addition of two new grids to the racing line-up.

The Pre-War Sports Car field makes its return to the event in honour of 'Mad Jack' Shuttleworth – winner of the first Grand Prix staged at a road circuit in the UK – following a four-year hiatus. Many of the cars will be racing at Silverstone in its current layout for the first time, with Bentleys, Bugattis and Alfa Romeos set to do battle with BMWs, Frazer Nashes, MGs, Talbots and Sunbeams.

"These pre-war cars were always an integral part of the event and it's fantastic that they will be back in what's clearly going to be a memorable 25th birthday bash," said chairman of Motor Racing Legends, Duncan Wiltshire.

One of the best-supported championships in historic racing – the HSCC Guards Trophy – will also be fielding a grid. The series caters for pre-'66 GT and pre-'69 sports cars, and will see its highest-profile race of the season take place at the event.

"I'm delighted that we have been able to secure a slot at the event for the Guards Trophy," said CEO of the HSCC Grahame White. "We regularly get 50 and 60-car entries and I'm sure there will be a very high demand for places at the event."

The field will include Jaguar E-types, Lotus Elans, Ginetta G12s, Morgans and TVRs. A number of significant Chevron B6s and B8s are also regular competitors and will provide a fitting tribute to the marque, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

Event director Nick Wigley said: "The presence of both Pre-War Sports Cars and Guards Trophy grids will add yet more variety and colour to this year's event. While sports racers from the '20s and '30s may not be among the fastest cars on show, they will certainly be among the most dramatic."
