Sprites spotted in Australian countryside

The Sprite Car Club of Australia holds many events for local branches, and one of the most active is the group from the area south of Sydney, which holds regular Friday runs through the countryside or along the coast, usually including a stop for lunch.

Early January saw a dozen cars meet at Ruby’s Café in Bulli and head south to Jamberoo, where they were met by three more before taking a scenic drive around the area. Next stop was the ‘Boneyard’, a secluded part of the rocky coast just north of Bombo, which is favoured by surfers. Access is by – officially, at least – a private road, but most found a way in and parked on the edge of the spectacular cliffs. A further few miles around the Minnamurra River and surrounding country roads ended with a stop for fish and chips by the harbour at Kiama.

Not restricted to using just Sprites or Midgets, two MGBs also took part in the run, joined by Graham and Joan McDonald’s Daimler 250 V8 and Neil and Dianne Blaney in their Mini Cooper.

Yours truly and Karen were out in the Arkley, Paul Unicomb came in his Midget and there were several ‘Frogeye’ Sprites, including a white example belonging to Ray and Denise Fahey, plus a blue car beloning to run organisers Keith Smith and Juliet Richardson. Other ‘Frogeye’ crews included Alan and Annemieke Edwards, Les and Shirley Bryant, Bob and Sandy Thomas and Brian and Gale Copland.

These roads are ideal for spirited Sprite driving and, despite temperatures in the thirties, all performed at their best. Lunch was good too!
