Unique Ghia creations entered in Arizona concours

| 21 Nov 2014

A brace of stunning Ghia designs from the 1950s is set to feature at the second Arizona Concours d'Elegance, taking place in Phoenix on 11 January.

Both cars will be making the trip to the Arizona Biltmore Resort from the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, and will form part of the carrozzeria's centenary celebrations.

The first of the pair, a 1953 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe, was given to Rita Hayworth by her husband, wealthiest man in the world Prince Ali Khan.  The stunning coupe was one of two concepts built by Ghia for the 1953 Paris Auto Salon, which is where it was first seen – and later bought – by Khan.

The Rita Hayworth Cadillac, as it became known, didn't bring the couple good fortune. Within a year of the actress receiving the gift, the duo filed for divorce.

Plymouth Explorer

A second, later car will also be gracing the concours lawn. The 1954 Plymouth Explorer came into being as a direct result of Chrysler's new man Virgil Exner (who was honoured at this year's Palos Verdes Concours) approaching Ghia for help in shifting the Detroit firm's reputation for building stodgy cars. The Explorer was one of many outlandish concepts that emerged from the relationship in the 1950s.

Several other notable Ghia designs are also expected to take part in the concours, which will include a special class dedicated to the design house.
