Campbell kin record attempt fails

Don Wales – grandson of Malcolm Campbell and nephew of Donald Campbell – and his son Joe failed in their attempt to enter the family in the record books at Pendine sands on 13-14 August.

The seven-mile stretch of beach in Carmarthenshire – venue for early Bluebird record attempts – played host to the Bluebird Electric's bid to smash the 137mph record set in 2000 (amazing only 10mph faster than Fred Marriott achieved in the Stanley Rocket steam car in 1906!).

But the rough sands unsettled the car and the runs came to a rapid halt when it hit a pothole and damaged steering and suspension.

Shame about their aborted record attempt.
There is a drag racing electric powered VW Beetle that goes under the name of Black Current that is running a 1/4 mile in
9.5 sec at 135 mph ! May be with different gearing this vehicle
could be a new world record holder.
