Sweeney buff wins dream drive

5

A fan of ’70s police drama the Sweeney has won a drive of the iconic 1975 Ford Consul GT that starred in the show after being randomly picked in a Facebook competition.

Winner Simon Gribble, who also bagged £1975 and a bottle of 1975 aftershave, put the vehicle through its paces last week at the Rockingham circuit and said: “It’s a great circuit. It was a nostalgic day and one I’ll remember for a long time, the car was fantastic.”

Starring John Thaw and Dennis Waterman, the landmark series followed the adventures of two members of Scotland Yard’s Flying Squad, or Sweeney Todd, as Inspector Jack Regan and Detective Sergeant George Carter tackled London’s criminal underworld.

The Sweeney’s DVD box set is now on sale for £39.99.

"We're the Sweeney, son, and we haven't had any dinner."

Iconic series that turned a half-decent saloon into an icon, too. If you weren't around in the seventies, take it from me, The Sweeney was groundbreaking.

Did he get the chance to crash into a big pile of empty cardboard boxes while chasing after an S-Type Jag?

Great series, love it.

I remember the police drama Sweeney, shown in the 70s, when I was just in my early teens. I rented the movie when I was on my way to the local garage to have my BMW 320D fixed because of its swirl flap failure. It is a cool movie at that time, especially 1975 Ford Consul GT, which I have always wanted to own. However, those that I have found in the market were no longer in good working condition, and a lot of work is required for me to do – bring it to the garage and have it fixed. But seeing this, I wished that I was the one who won this contest and have my long-time dream fulfilled of driving it.
