£1m Lamborghini leads Coys' Essen sale

A 1967 Lamborghini Miura SV is the star lot in an impressive collection of more than 100 classics up for sale at Coys' Techno Classica Essen auction.

Born as an original Miura P400 in 1967, the vehicle was converted to the later SV spec in 1974 – making it one of only around 150 in existence.

It's since enjoyed further restoration work, including more than €50,000 worth in recent years, and its €1.1m to €1.5m estimate underlines its overall quality.

However it's far from the only outstanding classic on offer at the auction, which takes place on Saturday, 24 March.

Also on sale will be a rare 1928 Bugatti Type 44 Fiacre with a colourful past: at various times over the past 90 years it was owned by Uwe Hucke, a renowned author of Bugatti books, and Helmut Schellenberg, a 1930s Bugatti racing driver. But vintage Bugattis in excellent condition don't come cheap, obviously, and the T 44 is expected to make between €500,000 and €550,000.

Other highlights include a 1936 Brooke ERA Monoposto, a 1957 AC Ace Competition Car and a Cadillac Limousine owned first by US president Dwight Eisenhower and later by his Bolivian counterpart Victor Paz Estenssoro. Amazingly, the Caddy still has marks on its bulletproof window from a failed assassination attempt on the Bolivian leader.

The Brooke is particularly interesting: it was comprehensively raced in the 1930s, taking part in the South African and Albi Grands Prix in 1938 and competing at Brooklands and other British tracks right up until the 1950s.

Possibly even more notable is the fact that it'll be sold with its own original and restored 1936 Bedford WS ‘ERA’ transporter.

As you might expect for an auction taking place in Germany, there are plenty of Porsches, too – among them several 1950s 356 models and a 2011 Porsche 997 GT3 4.0 – while the Ferrari contingent is led by a '67 330 GT 2+2 Series II in rare Rosso Cordoba.

Chris Routledge, CEO of Coys, said, “We are proud to return to Essen Techno Classica for another high quality auction.

"This is one of the world's most important historic motor car events and as the leading international auction brand in Germany we have put together a multi-million euro offering featuring some of the most beautiful cars ever built.”
