ASTON MARTIN DB4 Series 11 Ex Gilbey Engineering (1960)

The DB4 was a grand tourer sold by Aston Martin from 1958 until 1963. Technically it was a development of the DB Mark III it replaced but with a completely new body. The DB4's design formed the basis for later Aston Martin classics, such as the DB4 GT Zagato, the Lagonda Rapide 4-door saloon. It was eventually replaced by the Aston Martin DB5 in mid 1963.
There were five "series" of DB4. The most visible changes were the addition of window frames in Series II and the adoption of a barred (rather than eggcrate) grille in Series IV. The Series III cars differed from the earlier ones in having taillights consisting of three small lamps mounted on a chrome backing plate. Earlier cars have single-piece units and the last Series V cars of September 1962 have similar tail lights but recessed. The car we are offering for sale is a 2nd Series car which left the factory in September 1960 chassis number DB4 / 432R.
Originally registered to Formula 1 constructor and race team management company, Gilby Engineering Co. Limited, there are in total only three previous owners. First registered as HEX 6, it was subsequently registered 446 UXH, prior to being registered in Germany to the current owner. On return to the UK it is highly likely that the 446 UXH registration number will be re-allocated to the DB4, as the registration record is still live with the DVLA.
The first owner Gilby Engineering was in the majority owned by Sid Greene, who managed their own racing team, entering cars to be driven by future racing luminaries such as Stirling Moss, Roy Salvadori, Graham Hill and others. Following on from the 1950’s when they raced Fraser Nash, followed by a Maserati A6GCS , a Maserati 250 FS and a Cooper Maserati, in the early 1960's Gilby Engineering developed a Formula 1 car, the Gilby to be successfully driven by Sid’s son Keith Greene. Due to the motoring racing history of Gilby Engineering, we are sure that this DB4 would have been seen at all the major circuits when Keith was racing his Gilby in Formula 1 during the early 1960's
The DB4 moved to the second owner in 1991, who undertook the car’s first restoration, of which pictures are held in the car’s history file. The third owner Paul Baguet had further work carried out by Aston Services Dorset in the 1990’s, and ultimately commissioned us to sell the car on his behalf in the mid 2000’s. Following the sale to the present owner in 2005, we were commissioned to carry out a second restoration where the car was transformed to the condition it is in today, in Aston Martin Snow Shadow Grey, with a burgundy interior finished in Connolly hide. At the same time the engine was upgraded by converting the cylinder head to unleaded fuel, the fitting of triple SU carburettors, Vantage specification cams, resulting in an engine now developing 275BHP, a slight increase over the original factory Vantage specification of 266bhp. Again, the history file contains a comprehensive collection of invoices supported by our photographic records from the time.
It is hoped that the next owner will once again enjoy the DB4 once more on British roads and for European travel to which it is well suited, DB4/432R is now ready to be used once more for the purpose for which it was built, a grand tourer providing style and performance. With its early history it will no doubt be a welcome addition to the paddocks of Goodwood, Silverstone and other circuits were Astons Martins of a certain age are known to congregate.
The car is in excellent restored condition,in Snow Shadow Grey, with burgundy Connolly leather interior, the car is complimented by a set of Borrani wire wheels, with the restoration work we carried being supported by photographic records, with the history file containing notes, bills and invoices detailing the restoration work carried out over the last twenty five years. The more recent documentation is further complemented by Aston Martin service invoices up to 1969, and the original factory build sheet. This is an extremely well documented DB4 with a limited number of owners, the last two being customers of ours, together with the interesting early ownership history being owned in period by a Formula 1 Constructor and well-known personality in British motor racing circles.
