Description
It is Fiat‘s big boss, Gianni Agnelli himself, who orders the design of a special, open variant of the Fiat 500 to be able to drive celebrities and the well-to-do on the exclusive beaches and in luxurious ports. Ghia draws the body and builds the simple open 500, without doors and fixed roof. Only a sun canopy is sufficient to prevent the ‘happy few’ from getting burned in the sun.
The original appears in 1958, with wicker seats and back seat and only in charming pastel shades. Agnelli himself also likes the small dimensions because the Jolly, as the open 500 is called, can also be easily transported on the yachts of the super rich, such as his own 25-metre yacht ‘Agneta’. Customers include big names such as Aristotle Onassis and Princess Grace of Monaco, and President Lyndon B. Johnson happily drives his Jolly around his massive Texas ranch.
In summary, the 500 is Jolly St-Tropez, Palm Beach and Capri all in one, it’s 1960s jet set life in a nutshell (on wheels).
You want such a jolly Jolly? Then we also have some less good news. Only 650 Jollys were built and most of them no longer exist. It is estimated that there are still about 100 pieces left and the prices are invariably going through the ceiling. Real Jollys usually sell for rates well above € 100,000.
Fortunately, there are possibilities to transform a normal Fiat 500 into a Jolly. A ‘tribute to’, as we say. And that’s exactly the car we have here. The basis for this Jolly is a very healthy 500 from 1966 with an original two-cylinder engine with about 16.5 hp, although we can be a few tenths off. It was fitted with a Jolly-style body and of course all safety requirements were taken into account to ensure that the car is just as strong as the regular Fiat 500. The car was completely restored at the same time, so what you actually see here is an in Fiat 500 ‘Jolly Tribute’ in mint condition. Paintwork and all details are in excellent condition.
Driving the Jolly creates a lot of smiling faces, both for the occupants and for everyone who sees the car driving. Thumbs go up en masse and the compliments do not lie: this is a car that only provides positive reactions. There is no need to hurry, the 479 cc two-cylinder knows how to get the Jolly going well, but of course do not expect a strong push in the back.
We notice it in the showroom: few cars get as many approving glances as this ‘Jolly’.
The technology is as you would expect from a 500: completely up to date and in a very healthy condition. Of course also applies to this 500 what applies to every ‘Cinquecento’: maintenance and parts are affordable, the fun is priceless and that is exactly the right combination.
