1989 Ford GTD 40 (1989)

The Ford GT40 was born out of the infamous feud between the two manufacturing giants, Ferrari and Ford. By 1963, the deal was put to the table and would see Ford purchasing Ferrari to create road cars and competition machinery. Enzo Ferrari would soon reconsider the offer from Ford and sent them back to the US empty handed. Understandably angry, Henry Ford II ordered Ford’s point man, Don Frey, to go to Le Mans and beat Enzo Ferrari.
Roy Lunn who was involved with Aston Martin in their 1949 Le Mans effort, and was currently heading Ford’s advanced vehicle department, took the reins on the new proposal. The result was the car that became the Legendary Ford GT40, in all its glory, the title of racing legend didn’t come easy. The GT40 was mostly built with improvised engineering and with minimal expertise on the racing front. Bruce McLaren was hired to evaluate the new prototype and work would continue to complete the first car, chassis no: GT/101. The new V8 powerhouse could reach speeds of 200mph but due to aerodynamic styling, wanted to become airborne at the 170mph mark. Later in the year, the decision was made to move control of the project to ex-racing legend, Carroll Shelby. The move gave the GT40 project the kick it needed; the small block 4.7L 289 cu V8 was removed and the 7.0L 427 cu (used in the famous Cobra) was installed alongside the new ZF transmission unit. It wasn’t until 1966 when the GT40 earned its title with the famous 1-2-3 win at Le Mans with Henry Ford II’ rather gargantuan show of force and extensive testing beforehand.
The GTD 40 on offer is nothing short of a mechanical marvel when replicating such a legendary piece of automotive history.
