The 1947-48 Ford Station Wagons shared the same styling features as the Super Deluxe passenger cars, were the last models for full wooden bodies, and the 1948 model was subsequently the last model built in Henry Ford’s lifetime. While the 1948 model was filled with lots of “lasts”, they proved to be reliable daily drivers. At the time, they were viewed as some of the best wagons that allowed for freeway speeds while still feeling comfortable and safe. Even with a great outcome on the model year, production was low. Just 8,912 wagons were built for 1948, just over half of what came off the production line for 1947. At the arrival of 1949, Ford had moved to steel/wood combination bodies and said goodbye to full wooden bodies, making this model offered the last of its kind.
After this Ford Super Deluxe Station Wagon went through a frame-off restoration, it was painted a tasteful Glade Green that combines nicely with its well-varnished and well-restored wood panels. The brightwork shines brilliantly and sets off the body features throughout. The roof has been fitted with new black leatherette and the front grille features rare factory optioned fog lights.
The restoration follows you inside where the interior has been restored to what it would look like as if it just rolled off the line. The leather seating for eight has been reupholstered and the floor has been covered in a new black rubber floor mat that extends throughout the cabin. For the 1948 model, starting the car became a whole lot easier as the lock cylinder, bolt, and toggle switch was eliminated and the ignition was changed to be switched on by the key. This new setup would only last a year, as the key switch would be moved to the dashboard and the steering wheel lock would be taken out. The original maple faux-woodgrain dashboard gives a nice gleam and the plastic components housing the speedometer and clock show no cracks or flaking. A factory optioned heater for comfort and rare factory radio are both useful and beneficial accoutrements. The factory V-8 engine runs very well and is ready to be taken the distance with friends and family. The thrill of driving this station wagon is only enhanced with the three-speed manual transmission, which shifts smoothly and effortlessly through all its gears.
In its last year of production, the 1948 Super Deluxe was filled with more lasts than it was new features; its dependability and drivability proved to be a staple for the Ford Motor Company. Beautifully restored and handsomely presented, this wagon will make for a great leisure car to be driven to any destination desired - surfboard optional.
