When Ford introduced the all-new 1949 Custom Station Wagon on June 8th, 1948, the result was something that took the public by pleasant surprise. The new design welcomed in a more streamlined and futuristic body design with many changes inside and out. This was the first year Ford did away with all wood bodies and were equipped with steel roofs, tailgates, and doors. The decision for an all-steel structure helped to eliminate road noise. Another first for the all steel design allowed for a roof headliner in Ford wagons. The 1949 model was also the first year the two-door wagon was favored over the four-door wagon, yet even with this change, the new model could still comfortably seat the same number of passengers. The New York Fashion Academy declared it “Fashion Car of the Year”. Not only was the ‘49 visually stunning to most, if not all, but Ford was also able to smash its competition in sales that year as well. Ford offered their station wagon to the public six months before Chevrolet and nine months before Plymouth, and saw a production increase of over 300 percent from the previous year. 1949 proved to be Ford’s year and they could rightfully claim they were America’s number one auto manufacturer.
Nicknamed the “shoebox” Ford, this 1949 Ford Custom Station Wagon is every bit as handsome as it seems. Once acquired by the Steelewood Collection, it was treated to a frame-off restoration inside and out. The steel body was painted Meadow Green and the bolt-on wood panels were varnished to a brilliant shine. The chrome was replated resulting in a mirror finish. This '49 sits on whitewall tires with beautiful chrome rims that feature Meadow Green paint throughout.
The inside is still equipped with its original brown seating, which only shows slight signs of wear. The brown vinyl headliner was replaced, and a new black rubber floor mat was laid throughout. The steering wheel and faux woodgrain dashboard have been restored and present nicely. The interior features properly working gauges, a radio, Magic Air heater, and electric clock and its V-8 owner’s handbook is included in the sale. Under the hood lies the extremely clean and factory-correct V-8 engine. The car runs and drives very well, and the three-speed manual transmission shifts effortlessly. This station wagon is also equipped with desirable overdrive which allows for the car to operate at a lower RPM and higher speeds.
This 1949 Ford wagon ticks the box on the bucket list for a fun, enjoyable and seldom seen post-war car. The only thing left to do is sit back, put in the car in gear and enjoy the ride.
