1953 marked Ford’s 50th anniversary and during this time, they saw a lot of changes throughout their company. For 1953, almost all the cars were completely redesigned and, with the sale of the Iron Mountain plant, all production of the station wagons were moved to the Rouge plant in Dearborn, Michigan. The Country Squire Station Wagon was introduced in the Crestline series and featured a fresh and modern look. The new design came from arguably one of the most influential automobile designers in the world, Mr. Gordon Buehrig. Buehrig, who is responsible for the design of the Auburn Boattail Speedster and Cord 810/812, joined the Ford design team in 1949 and is also credited with designing Ford’s first retractable hard top. The new Country Squire could now be ordered as a two- or four-door and featured the new hang-on wood framing along the sides. The Crestline series station wagon was Ford’s most costly model for the year; it was also its heaviest with a weight of 3,609 pounds. The ‘53 proved to be a success with the American people; sales had more than doubled from the previous year, thanks in part to the baby boom, and the car was dubbed “The New Standard of the American Road”.
Slated as the last station wagon in the Steelewood Collection, this 50th Anniversary Edition Crestline Country Squire Station Wagon appears as if it had just rolled out of the Dearborn plant. Once it was acquired by its current owner, the car was sent to woodie expert Nick Alexander for a complete and comprehensive frame-off restoration. The outside was coated in Raven Black and the hang-on framing maple wood panels were varnished to a beautiful glow. To emulate more of a woodie feel, the Country Squire even had woodgrain features around the side windows and rear window.
The restoration continues inside where the outcome is truly stunning. The bench seating was upholstered in a new two-tone beige and brown vinyl material. The middle row has an asymmetrical split that allows for half of the seat to be pulled down for easier access to the rear. The headliner has been fitted with matching brown vinyl and the floor has a new black rubber floor mat extending from the front to rear. The gold dash has been restored and houses all the properly working gauges, radio, and clock. To celebrate Fords 50th anniversary, a chrome emblem was placed in the center of the steering wheel. For the 1953 model, the dome light was removed, and lights were placed on both sides in between the doors. All in all the entire interior compartment shows beautifully. The flathead V-8 engine has been completely restored cosmetically and mechanically and is now in show form. The engine block was resprayed in its original factory red and features period-correct components. Backing the engine is the mechanically sound three-speed manual transmission with desirable and optional overdrive.
The Crestline Country Squire Station Wagon proved to be a good move for Ford; the new and improved model was able to increase in sales and revive the woodie wagon craze. Beautifully restored by one of the best in the country and hailing from a lifelong collector, this station wagon is a delightful car to pack up the family and take on a Sunday morning drive and score a prestigious award on the show circuit.
