Land Rover 88 Swiss post car, very original, petrol engine (1975)

Isn’t she lovely? Do you too notice something unusual? We will explain. This 1975 series 3 Land Rover 88 has a different roof than usual. The reason why lays in the fact this car was built for the Swiss postal package delivery service. To cope with regular snow in Switzerland, a four wheel drive was essential. The choice was to purchase a standard Land Rover and then have it modified by top Swiss car magnate Emil Frey. In those far aways days when there was no such thing as Amazon or eBay, receiving a package was a rarity. It also meant that the cars then were worked far less hard than todays vans. This one has clocked up less than 82,000 km. It still is a fine car to see as well as being extraordinarily authentic. The other remarkable feature is the fact this is petrol engine version, and in hindsight an excellent choice considering its low mileage.
The bodywork is as straight as an arrow. The alignment correct with fine original panelwork. The two-tone finish is classic with a white roof and green paintwork on the body. The car has original steel wheels shod in good quality rubber and the chassis is rock solid. The car’s appearance is stunning with an appeal sadly all to often lacking in todays offers. The little steel plate to catch spilt petrol is another nice feature, which leads one to wonder if delivery guys back then were not so different from their modern counterparts. In our case that is happily not an issue, the car has been very neatly maintained, driven and serviced by someone with love for mechanical aspect. After service as a delivery vehicle the car was added to a Land Rover collection, out of which we eventually were able to buy it. This history has certainly contributed to its current outstanding quality. The dashboard is heaven for those who love functionality. Everything is in a logical place, the gauges are large and clear and the controls easy to find and use. You wont need to search for
some micro-switch whilst travelling along a dirt track. The original seat and boot space upholstery is very neat. You can sit 3 men upfront and snuggly fit 4 men in the back.
The car has a very sturdy manual petrol engine. There is the option to engage the FWD when needed, offering you infinite grip on any surface. This car is not fast but it keeps going. The story of the hare and the tortoise springs to mind. The car has drum brakes on all fours that are more than adequate. The bodywork and frame ensure relaxed handling with no unpleasant tremors being fed through from the drive train.
This series 3 Land rover 88 will last for years to come and will provide infinite pleasure to its new owner.
You will not be able to find another Swiss postman’s car with this classic finish. What a fine Land Rover with a lovely story to tell.
