Like the Ford Station Wagon, the 1950 Mercury Station Wagons saw little to no change from the previous year. Subtle changes came to the exterior like pushbutton door handles, new parking lights, a design change to the grille and the word ‘Mercury’ placed in chrome on the front of the hood. However, the interior changes were a bit more noticeable; a completely new instrument panel was installed, which was called the “Safe-T-Vue”. The new panel grouped the gauges closer together and were raised, allowing the driver to have a better view. Mercury also installed a new heating and ventilating system that promised “living room comfort” with a complete change of air in a matter of seconds. The genuine wood wagon phase was slowly coming to a close in 1950 as evidenced by the production numbers. Mercury produced 151,489 automobiles in 1950, but only 1,746 were station wagons.
Ready to roll into any car show or downtown cruise-in, this Mercury station wagon has it all. Once it was welcomed into the Steelewood Collection, it was given a complete frame-off restoration. With the body being straight and solid, the outside was repainted in its factory Everglade Green, an appealing color in any light. All the brightwork shines nicely and presents very well. The wood panels have been varnished and give off a deep warm glow. Sitting on newer whitewall tires, a factory option at the time, the outside looks as if it had just rolled off the assembly line.
The inside features new green comfortable upholstery - one of three different colors offered in 1950 as well as a green headliner under the steel roof. The dashboard and chrome components have been restored and all the knobs and buttons are in working order. The dash also houses the factory correct AM radio, a factory option in 1950. The engine has been painted in factory-correct green and the entire compartment has been fully detailed. The V-8 engine has been completely sorted and runs tremendously well. Other than a modern battery, the engine compartment features factory-correct components.
Well taken care of while in the Steelewood Collection, this Mercury Station Wagon would make a great addition to any collection or collector looking for a low production, beautifully restored automobile.
