Porsche have produced a myriad of modifications to the 911 since its inception  in 1963. All featured a rear engine air cooled six cylinder which evolved from 2.2 litres to 2.7 litres by 1976. The car was bigger and more comfortable than earlier Porsches and could be driven in a relatively sedate manner or plunged around a racing circuit or rally section if desired.
The Targa refers to the removable roof section and the name comes from the success Porsches have enjoyed in the Targa Florio motor race since 1956. The 911 2.7 Targa was only built between 1975 to 1977, featuring the classic narrow body, and of the 3444 911 produced in 1976 by Porsche, less than fifty right hand drive Targa Sportomatic cars were built and brought to UK dealers (the Sportomatic gearbox, Zuffenhausen in 1967, has a vacuum operated clutch, a clutch-less manual essentially). Its introduction heralded an important development in the 911's production process: the adoption of Thyssen anti-corrosion zinc coating for the steel body panels, which was a vast improvement on previous methods. The 2.7 engine was a naturally aspirated version, utilising the new Bosch K-Jetronic CIS fuel injection and was one of the earliest Porsches to attain reasonable fuel consumption without a significant performance loss.
DVCA are pleased to offer this 911 2.7 Targa in red with a full black leather interior. It has been in the current fastidious ownership for sixteen years and during that time, it has been clearly maintained to a very high standard; indeed, evidence in the file shows that the Porsche has been cherished throughout its life. It is worth mentioning that this example is the only known Sportomatic Targa with full leather trim and cruise control, and it is also fitted with a remote alarm and central locking as standard.
We understand that there are no known faults with the sports car. The interior and upholstery is in good condition, the bodywork appears to be very original and in good order, apart from some paint age bubbling to the front bumper right hand end, and the engine lid would benefit from a polish. Mechanically, it has been maintained to a high standard, with recent work carried out including a brake overhaul, the fitting of a new battery, and a lubrication service. The Porsche has a current MOT test certificate and two new tyres were fitted in 2018.
The comprehensive history file contains many invoices from the current and previous ownerships, dating back to the eighties and confirming the current mileage, together with a handwritten log of work carried out in eighties and nineties, Porsche Club of Great Britain correspondence, a valuation from 1990, information from ownership in the nineties, DVLA correspondence, the original driver’s manual, an original technical specifications booklet, photographs, old tax discs, MOT test certificates from the 80s, 90s and 00s, and the V5C registration certificate.
