1930 20/25 Park Ward / Salmons Cabriolet GDP17 (1930)

A very unusual car, having been bodied by Park Ward as a handsome D-back Limousine in 1930, it seems that it was converted by Salmons shortly afterwards into a full cabriolet, with their patented 'Tickford' fabric roof, (confirmed by the patent plate which is still in place), which cranks up or down in an easy, one person operation with the use of a crank handle. As the window frames stay in place when the roof is lowered, there is an option for relatively draught-free open air motoring as well as plenty of room for six people, including the fold down occasional seats.The car is very clean and well-presented throughout, with good quality paintwork and upholstery, with appealing early instruments and lovely veneers, and a particularly pleasing, correct engine bay, which includes an aluminium cylinder head and the exhaust system is a recent stainless steel one. Equipment includes a full set of 'Ace' wheel discs and an impressive selection of correct tools. Other vintage features include ‘cut away’ front wings, ‘short’ radiator, lovely headlights and sidelights and of course the shorter wheelbase of the first examples of the 20/25s.

Snippets: Capt Wentworth & Lady Wraxall
Capt Fredrick Charles Ulick Vernon Wentworth (1866/1947) joined the Royal Navy in 1882 serving as a Midshipman on HMS Agincourt during the Bombardment of Alexandria in 1882.  By 1901 Midshipman Wentworth had gained the rank of Commander & in 1918 he was appointed Captain of HMS Vernon - better known as the “Torpedo School”, he even found time to invent the Wentworth Mining Telephone Patt 1684 which was used on gunnery ranges between the firing and impact positions.  The Captain was a keen motorist and from 1926 until 1947 he ordered a Bentley 3ltr, a Rolls-Royce 20hp, two Rolls-Royce 20/25s, two Bentley 3 ½ litres and a Bentley 4 ¼.  After his death GDP17 was acquired by Lady Ursula Wraxall (1888/1979) of Tyntesfield near Bristol. In 1927 Ursula, eldest daughter of 6th Baron Wenlok, married George Gibbs (1st Baron Wraxall) at St Margaret’s in Westminster – Ursula had been a Maid of Honour to HM Queen Mary, when Ursula married her wedding guests included King George V & Queen Mary.  Lady Ursula’s wedding dress was created by Elizabeth Handley-Seymour (1867-1948), she also created Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon’s wedding dress and the coronation gown for Queen Elizabeth II.  The Wraxall marriage was short lived as the Baron died of pneumonia in 1931 leaving Lady Ursula with two young sons under the age of 4 to bring up at the family estate of Tyntesfield.  In 1935 realising that the clock tower of Tyntesfield needed major renovation Lady Ursula simply dismantled the tower, stored the metal parts & had realigned the roof of the house!  During WWII the property was used by the US Army and following D-Day it was the largest US Army hospital in Europe.  The fortune used to build Tyntesfield came from Peruvian Guano which was used a fertiliser; the Gibbs family were well known for being collectors and when the 2nd Baron Wraxall died he left instructions for Tyntesfield to be sold and the proceeds dispersed amongst his heirs. The National Trust had earlier earmarked Tyntesfield as a property of interest due to the many years of hoarding by the Gibbs family and when it came onto the market the National Trust raised enough funds enabling them to buy the house & its contents. By 2013 the National Trust had catalogued over 47,000 individual items in Tyntesfield including items such as silverware by William Butterfield, books by Pugin & Ruskin, a carved coconut & an unexploded WWII Bomb!  They are still counting.
