1978 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow II (1978)

THE RHODES COLLECTION – 1978 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow II
As the original sales invoice and service book confirm, this magnificently preserved Rolls Royce Silver Shadow II was bought new from H.R. Owen’s Old Brompton Road showroom in the late July of 1978 and was finished in the classically elegant colour scheme of Cardinal Red coachwork over Magnolia hide.
To have had an eye for style this discerning, the first owner was as debonair as you’d expect.
Mr Edward Sahakian was an Iranian brewing magnate who’d escaped his increasingly troubled homeland and, now a resident of the UK, was in the early stages of setting up London’s premier cigar lounge. As the founder of what would become Davidoff of London and a well-heeled resident of London’s most fashionable addresses, Mr Sahakian couldn’t very well be seen driving around the Royal Boroughs in any ol’ motorcar. It had to be a Silver Shadow.
Including taxes, registration and the beautifully apt humidor option this very example weighed in at an eye watering £27,464.69, but we think that this most eligible of Rolls Royce customers would have hardly have raised an eyebrow.
Given Mr Sahakian’s commute was only just over a mile from a quintessential mews residence in Belgravia, where the Rolls Royce was surely garaged, to his enviable St. James business this car’s staggering low miles are no surprise at all. The fastidiously maintained service book and accompanying invoices confirm the story; up to 1987, this Silver Shadow had driven just 11,532 miles.
At around this time it is believed that Mr Sahakian placed the Rolls Royce into storage, with negligible miles covered in the years that immediately followed, before eventually passing through the trade and onto its second owner in 2003.
This fantastically preserved Silver Shadow II joined our collection in 2015 and was immediately sent to the eminent marque specialists at Frank Dale & Stepsons for a full check over and mechanical recommission, a process which has comprehensively returned the car to its perfect driving condition after barely turning a wheel in the last 20 years.
Having not yet covered 18,000 miles from new, and having clearly been properly stored when not in use, this is unquestionably among the very best original Silver Shadows there can be. Alongside the unmarked factory paint and trim, the original books and unused tools remain with this pampered three-owner example.
Cosmetics, mileage and invoices aside, what is perhaps most telling is that the humidor and ash trays appear to have seen no use at all.
