In 1965 Volvo introduced the Amazon, being a completely new model and quite different from its predecessors. Its styling attracted many admirers from the start and the Amazon scored high when it came to safety. The Amazon becomes a success story with many sales of this Swedish saloon been driven longterm.
There is long and there is really long. This beige coloured B20 falls into the latter category, a rare occasion. The first owner bought the car in 1969 and probably could not have foreseen the car would remain in the family until 2021. For over 50 years the Amazon did its stuff in the Swedish climate without fail. The owner dutifully added handwritten notes regarding the mileage in a booklet until the late eighties. Refuelling stops, special events, trip registration; the owner was meticulous is keeping record, that was for sure! When it became time for this owner to say goodbye to the car, the family did not hesitate for one moment: The Swede had to stay in the family. The family also recognised the value of everything that came with car, so that lots of paperwork was retained, some dating from just after its delivery. That all went on in quite the same vane until 2021 when the car left the family for the first time. The car was then restored to its former glory starting from a very healthy base.
Whilst still in hands of the first family rust prevention treatment was done, one of the reasons the car is in very sound condition. This Volvo amazon was then fitted with inner mudguards and resprayed. The engine was taken out and thoroughly overhauled and detailed and brought back to a very tidy condition. This has resulted in a great looking Amazon 121 B20. The bodywork is neat without any blemish. The alignment is neat and the whole car feels as solid as a block as only Volvo know how.
Inside the care and attention lavished is no different with new upholstery, door cards and carpets having been fitted. As this restoration is a recent occurrence it would appear we have an as good as new Amazon. The original instruments and switching gear all work perfectly.
There no unpleasant surprises either when it comes to describing the mechanical prowess of this car. The engine, gearbox, suspension and brakes are all in very good shape., The 2-litre B20 engine that replaced the B18 one in 1969 is in optimal working order and the 4-speed shifts smoothly providing overall excellent performance. This is a car that is very pleasant to drive with added safety and reliability. Underneath this Amazon is neat and tidy without any signs of damage or corrosion.
