Only the best
The classic car world’s auction houses always reserve some of their most special lots of the year for the sales held during Monterey Car Week in California – as this Bugatti testifies.
This car has been consigned to the official sale of the 74th Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, being run by Gooding Christie’s at the Parc du Concours on 15-16 August 2025.
It will go under the hammer on the first day, with a pre-sale estimate of $3-3.5m (c£2.2-2.6m).
Here is its story.
Anniversary model
The Bugatti EB110 GT (for ‘Gran Turismo’) was first shown in Paris on 15 September 1991, Ettore Bugatti’s 110th birthday.
Its V12 engine with four turbochargers and intercoolers producing 552bhp, plus all-wheel drive and a carbonfibre monocoque, meant it relaunched the marque with a bang.
Upping the ante
Just six months later at the 1992 Geneva show, Bugatti revealed the EB110 Super Sport version, which raised the output to 602bhp.
Its maker claimed that this variant could do 0-62mph in just 3.26 secs en route to a 351kph (218mph) top speed, meaning at launch this was the fastest production car in the world.
Made in Italy
The cars were produced in a purpose-built, state-of-the-art factory in Campogalliano, just outside Modena in Italy.
But how many were there?
Low-mile lovely
According to Gooding Christie’s who is selling the car you see here, a mere 136 EB110s left the factory, of which around 30 were Super Sport models, like this one.
And of those cars, we wonder how many have covered just 1017km (632 miles), which is all this car has done.
Stylish in silver
This 1994 Bugatti EB110 Super Sport, chassis 39012, is finished in what the auction house claims is a rare colour, but when so few were built, most shades will be pretty rare!
This hue is known as Grigio Chiaro Metallizzato (light-grey metallic) and sits well with the cabin upholstered in black leather.
Been around the world
On 23 March 1994, this car was delivered to its first owner, Ariane Müller in Germany, via specialist dealer Auto König.
It later joined a supercar collection in Japan before, in 2012, moving to Switzerland, then was exported to the USA in 2019.
Tender, loving care
In America it’s spent time in two collections, where it has been little used, hence its 1017km odometer reading at the time of cataloguing.
Yet it has also been lovingly looked after. In 2019 it received attention from model specialists in Italy and it had more care in 2023, including getting a fresh set of Continental tyres.
Back again
This time-warp Bugatti EB110 Super Sport is being sold with a selection of tools, books, accessories, promotional material and factory literature.
It was sold by Gooding & Company at its 2022 Pebble Beach sale, where its $3,167,500 became the highest price ever paid for this model at auction, according to Glenmarch.
It is nearly time
Could it beat its own record, three years on?
