This car, chassis 9113300157, previewed the 930-generation Porsche 911 turbo, which arrived in production-ready form, 50 years ago at the 1974 Paris Salon.

Based on a 911S chassis and built in Porsche’s design studio, the concept car’s hand-painted ‘turbo’ livery made it a real head-turner.

It was slightly misleading, though, because the turbocharged flat-six engine wasn’t quite ready in time for the German motor show.

Instead, a mock-up was built using a standard engine, plus some wooden components painted to look real.

The ‘whale-tail’ spoiler, flared wheelarches and enlarged Fuchs wheels were carried over to the production 3-litre homologation car.

Chassis 9113300157 travelled the world, appearing at motor shows throughout 1973.

Two years later, Australian racer Alan Hamilton bought the 911 turbo concept car after he spotted it during a visit to the Porsche factory in Stuttgart, Germany.

By then, it had been fitted with pre-production parts from the RSR race car.

This appealed to Hamilton, who struck a deal with Porsche and had the unique 911 delivered Down Under.

The Porsche 911 turbo prototype remained in Australia until 2010, when it went to an American buyer who displayed the car at that year’s Greenwich Concours d’Elegance.

It returned to Europe in 2016.

This unique Porsche 911 is sure to turn heads at Concours of Elegance from 30 August-1 September 2024, when it will join hundreds of classic cars in Hampton Court Palace’s Fountain Gardens.
