Also in my garage: vintage gardening gear

Painted bright yellow, with evocative ‘Mustang’ script stamped on the side of the bonnet, this is one raucous lump of 1970s Americana.

“Once you start it, the blade underneath is permanently running because it’s attached directly to the engine,” explains Wendy Mackellow.

Husband Paul adds: “Hence why I’ve removed the blades.”

The mighty Mowett Mustang 5hp (below) is just one of the 23 ride-on lawnmowers in this couple’s huge collection of vintage horticultural equipment.

Ride-on lawnmowers are among the largest machines in Wendy and Paul Mackellow’s collection, which extends to hand tools and tiny two-stroke engines

“We bought a Tarpen generating set in 2004,” recalls Paul. “It ran and had a little hedge-cutter with it.

“I’d been going to country shows since the 1980s, but I had never seen anybody do a display of Tarpen machines, so I started collecting them.”

Fast-forward to 2024, and Paul and Wendy have an impressive assortment of old-school tools, including sheep-shearing equipment, hand tools, garden sprinkler systems and those ride-ons, all of which they bring to shows across the UK.

“The collection is weird, wacky and wonderful, and, because it’s fairly small stuff, you don’t need that much room”

“A lot of it is themed,” says Wendy. “We don’t take the same exhibit to every show.

“We were at the Classic Motor Show in November 2023 and the weekend before we were at the Newark Vintage Tractor & Heritage Show.

“In February 2024 we were at Three Counties Showground in Malvern for the Tractor World Show; there’s another big one at Newby Hall in Yorkshire.

“We certainly get about a bit. The furthest we’ve travelled to buy a tractor is probably Redruth in Cornwall.”

The selection comprises various makes of tractor, but mainly International Cub Cadet and Wheel Horse.

“They’re American,” adds Wendy, “and better built than UK tractors.”

Paul agrees: “Cub Cadets certainly were. Built like a tank compared with some of the UK stuff.”

The curated collection is displayed across three sheds, plus some overspill that lives in a shipping container.

The first shed includes Wendy’s favourite: a Cub Cadet 100 that was a birthday present from Paul.

“We’d wanted one for ages, and we saved it from becoming a lawnmower racer,” she explains.

Another building is dedicated to a set of WOLF-Garten hand tools, while the third features a selection of two-stroke engines, vintage Jobber machines (in effect a motorised garden fork) and Paul’s favourite, a 1968 Wheel Horse Commando.

US-built International Cub Cadet and Wheel Horse lawnmowers account for the majority of the 23-strong collection of ride-on machines

“It was the first decent tractor I bought and it’s never let me down,” he says.

“The collection is weird, wacky and wonderful, and, because it’s fairly small stuff, you don’t need that much room.

“That’s one of the things I like about horticulture: it goes from tiny hand tools up to ride-on tractors, plus everything in between.”

There’s also a substantial hoard of books, magazines and brochures to complement the machinery.

“We always have literature as part of the display so people can read more about it,” explains Paul.

“I have lost count of how much I’ve got, but it’s a lot.”

The couple admits that the early, gung-ho approach to collecting has since softened.

“Paul will say ‘I like that’, but I’ll now ask if we really need it,” says Wendy.

Much of the equipment lived a hard working life and would have been abandoned after serving its purpose on farms and in gardens, which can make it difficult to find tools in complete and working order.

“A lot of this kit was used and abused for years,” Wendy confirms.

“Some people collect cars – eventually I’ll get myself a classic Fiat 500 – but if people don’t collect things, they are not preserved,” she continues.

“They will all disappear and the next generation won’t know about them.

“One day we’ll try and get it all together in one building to make a museum out of it. That’s our goal.”
