Since childhood, Barry John has had a strong interest in Land Speed Record legends but it was the discovery of Hot Rod magazine that really ignited his passion.

“I knew the names of [the] Campbells and John Cobb,” John says, “but through the pages of Hot Rod I became mesmerised by the American challengers.

“Hot rodders Craig Breedlove and Art Arfons came from an age when conventional thinking was thrown aside and anything seemed possible.”

Barry John’s designs have focused on the drivers and characters, too. Clockwise from top left: first LSR holder Gaston de Chasseloup-Laubat; pioneer Walter Baker; Lambretta rider Romolo Ferri; land and water speed legend Donald Campbell

That keen interest in high speed led to visits to Beaulieu to view surviving Land Speed Record machines, while trips to Santa Pod and building a Ford Popular street rod further fuelled his enthusiasm.

As John researched the stories of speed stars, he had an idea of producing his own book: “Today the adjective ‘awesome’ has lost its true meaning, but for me the stories of Kitty O’Neil, Mickey and Danny Thompson and Frank Lockhart are truly epic.”

Stan Barrett, the valiant pilot of the sensational Budweiser Rocket, is another of his heroes.

“Whether he broke the sound barrier or not doesn’t detract from Barrett’s bravery,” he adds, “risking his life 18 times in the quest for speed.”

As well as writing the book, John decided to create his own illustrations of the vehicles, ranging from the 43mph Jeantaud Duc through to Thrust SSC and the Aussie Invader II.

To expand the story, John then set about drawing selected Bonneville pilots, too.

“When I started the project I had no idea whether I would find the necessary reference, particularly the older ones,” he explains.

“Paradoxically, the hardest was Turbinator II but Rick Vesco kindly solved the problem by taking close-ups of the logos and graphics just weeks before his car broke the 500mph barrier.”

Having mechanical knowledge was an advantage, says John, but the project demanded dogged determination at times: “I adopted the mantra that there is no ‘no’.

“Finding a portrait of Herbert Bowden took six months.”

Driving his twin-engined 18.5-litre challenger to 109mph down Ormond Beach, Bowden’s brave speed wasn’t officially recognised due to the car’s excess weight.

As a graphic designer, John is very experienced with Adobe Illustrator: “Mine is quite old but there is no need for anything more up to date.

“Illustrator is ideally suited for drawing mechanical things and graphic logos. It would take twice as long in Photoshop.”

“With reference sorted, I draw a blueprint of the car then build up each element – tyres, wheels and bodywork – on to different layers.

“Flat colour is then applied, which is relatively simple, but only when applying light and dark graduations do the drawings really start to come to life.”

Barry John’s book, Quest for Speed, explores Land Speed Record machines and their brave pilots

John has long admired the work of American illustrator Nancy Stahl and Japanese artist Hajime Sorayama.

“There are many more talented artists but the opportunity to combine drawing and writing for this book has been a fabulous journey for me,” he says.

Quest for Speed is published by Evro, priced at £30
