Only a marginal success in the UK, Toyota's 1000 was Publica else-where, and a direct competitor to the Datsun Cherry. Simple engineering - front mounted ohv engine, leaf-sprung beam axle rear end - but front discs redeemed this. Small passenger compartment (no better than Austin A35, some say), and all Uk cars were sold with 45bhp 1-litre engine, and about 80mph top speeds. Why bother? Few UK buyers did!
