Another ex-Fangio car to be sold... but you can actually afford this one

| 8 Oct 2013

The ex-Juan Manuel Fangio Mercedes-Benz W196 may have set a world record for a car sold at public auction, but you could own an ex-Fangio car for rather less. And it's still a real rarity, especially on these shores.

Coming up for sale at Silverstone Auctions' sale at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show in November is a 1970 IKA Torino 380S that was owned by the maestro.

It is believed that Fangio was gifted the Argentinian-built Torino as thanks for his contribution in its existence. It will be sold with documents related to Fangio’s ownership, including insurance documents, an Argentinian vehicle green card, handbook, service card and Fangio’s international licence.

Offered in highly original condition, the car is said to be in exceptionally good order, and has been untouched by his family since he passed away in 1995. It will be sold with no reserve.

Nick Whale, managing director of Silverstone Auctions, said: "Fangio is the king of them all, so we’re honoured to have his 1970 IKA Torino at our NEC Classic Sale and the fact that it is being offered without reserve is sure to only increase its appeal to potential bidders.

"By successes Juan Manuel Fangio can be regarded as the greatest racing driver of all time. His Formula One percentages still eclipse any other driver, so if you want to own a car that has been touched with motor racing greatness and won’t break the bank, then this is surely it."
