Championship-winning Porsche set to headline Mecum

| 30 Jul 2012

A 1150bhp 917 (main pic) will be just one of the heavyweights on sale as 40 rare Porsches cross the block at Mecum’s Monterey Daytime Auction, in the USA, from 16-18 August.

One of the most distinctive machines to emerge from Stuttgart, Lot S123 was also one of the most successful. Sponsored by L&M, it made its debut in 1972 and went on to take the Can-Am Championship with George Follmer at the helm. The 5.4-litre twin-turbocharged engine would take him to second place the following year.

It will be joined by a 1986 Porsche 962 (above) from the Steve Goldin Collection, which won at Sebring in ’86 setting yet-to-be-broken records in the process.

Road-going cars will also be on offer. Chief among them may be this 911S (above), which was three-time Le Mans winner Al Holbert’s daily driver. It comes complete with a fully documented history, has recently been fully restored and has its original owner’s manual and tool kit.

Other interesting lots include a 1957 356 Speedster, a 1973 911 RS (below) and, for people who want Le Mans performance for the road, an ’05 650bhp Carrera GT.
