Connaught tops Silverstone Auctions’ Race Retro sale

| 25 Feb 2013

A 1953 Connaught AL10 made £193,000 at Silverstone Auctions’ Race Retro sale on Saturday.

Once raced by Roy Salvadori, it had been estimated to sell for £200-250,000.

A 1985 Ford Sierra Cosworth prepared for Group N rallying did much better against its estimate of £27-30,000. It was subject to a hard-fought bidding war, blowing away its expectations by selling for £39,900.

Some big lots failed to sell, though, including Lola T70 MkIIIB that had been expected to make £570-650,000 and a 1953 Cooper Bristol with an estimate of £140-160,000.

Those contributed to a sale rate of 64%.

Road-going highlights included a 1967 Aston Martin DB6 making £123,750, while a Land-Rover 80in Series 1 doubled its pre-sale estimate going for an impressive £32,850.

The auction house’s next sale will be held at the Historic Sports Car Club’s International Trophy on 18 May.
