Rare muscle car survivor to headline Aussie sale

| 15 Aug 2016

A one-owner HG GTS Monaro described as being in ‘timewarp’ condition is poised to become one of the stars of Shannons’ Winter Classic auction on 29 August.

The muscle car’s condition is all the more incredible when you take in to account the whopping 243,000km it’s covered since being delivered new to Canberra in 1970, making it a rare survivor. The car owes much to its fastidious owner, who has kept the car in fine condition.

Finished in its original Kashmir White with contrasting black stripes and matching black and Houndstooth upholstery, the Monaro retains a number of its original features, including the under-dash air conditioning and radio. It’s expected to fetch between $55,000 and $65,000.

Also expected to draw a great deal of attention is a 1967 Volkswagen Split-Window Microbus. The Australia-built bus is an original right-hand-drive model, which also spent a number of years in Japan. It could sell for as much as $45,000.

Fans of British sports cars will have the choice of two no-reserve beauties: a 1968 Triumph TR5 finished in British Racing Green, which is expected to fetch up to $62,000, and a Sunbeam Alpine MkV convertible from a year earlier, which is tipped to make between $20,000 and $25,000.

One of the bargains of the sale could be a 1988 Alpina C2 2.7 convertible. The hot E30 has power to rival its M3 cousin, but will be considerably more affordable at just $15-20,000.

Elsewhere, an Austin J40 pedal car is expected to fetch as much as $7000.
